Sendai

Sendai is the largest city in Japan’s Tōhoku region and the capital of Miyagi Prefecture. It is known as the “City of Trees” and was founded as a castle town by Date Masamune.

Sendai Castle: A hilltop castle site in Sendai built by the feudal lord Date Masamune in the early seventeenth century. Its ruins and surviving structures mark the city’s origins as Masamune’s castle town.
Date Masamune: A Japanese daimyō who founded the Sendai domain and established Sendai Castle in the early seventeenth century. Masamune made Sendai the seat of his domain and shaped its early development.
Tohoku University: A national research university headquartered in Sendai, established in 1907. Its campuses and research institutions make Sendai a major center for higher education.
2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami: A magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011. The disaster caused severe damage and loss of life in Sendai, especially along its coast.
Tōhoku region: The northeastern region of Japan’s main island, Honshu, comprising six prefectures. Sendai is the region’s largest city and principal urban center.
Zuihōden: The ornate mausoleum in Sendai where Date Masamune, founder of the Sendai domain, is buried. Its lavish decoration preserves the legacy of the city’s founder.
Sendai Domain: A feudal domain in northeastern Japan ruled by the Date family during the Edo period. The domain’s territory and government centered on the city now called Sendai.

Sendai Airport tsunami: The inundation of Sendai Airport by tsunami waters during the 2011 Tōhoku disaster. The airport’s flooding became a widely documented example of the tsunami’s reach inland.
Matsushima: A bay in Miyagi Prefecture famous for its many pine-covered islands. This nearby scenic destination is closely associated with travel from Sendai.
