Seneca the Younger

Seneca the Younger (c. 4 BCE–65 CE) was a Roman Stoic philosopher, dramatist, and statesman. His essays, letters, and tragedies joined Stoic ethics to political life and literary drama.

Stoicism: A Hellenistic philosophy that teaches virtue as the basis of a good life and distinguishes what depends on us from what does not. Seneca adapted this school’s ethics to Roman moral and political concerns.
Letters to Lucilius: A collection of 124 philosophical letters by Seneca, addressed to his friend Lucilius Junior. The letters show his method of turning Stoic principles into advice about ordinary life.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca the Elder: A Roman rhetorician and writer whose surviving works preserve speeches and declamations from the early empire. Seneca the Younger was born into his family and inherited a world shaped by rhetoric.
