Shafi'i school

The Shafi'i school is one of Sunni Islam’s four major schools of jurisprudence. It follows legal methods associated with Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i, especially his systematic use of the Qur'an, Sunnah, consensus, and analogy.

Islamic jurisprudence: The human discipline of interpreting Islamic sources to derive practical religious rulings. The Shafi'i school is one enduring tradition within this broader discipline.
Al-Risala: A work attributed to al-Shafi'i that sets out principles for interpreting Islamic legal sources. It presents an early systematic account of the evidence and reasoning central to the school.

Maliki school: A Sunni school of jurisprudence founded on the teachings of Malik ibn Anas. Its distinctive authority for the inherited practice of Medina differs from Shafi'i method.
Islam in East Africa: The varied Muslim communities and traditions along and inland from East Africa's Indian Ocean coast. Shafi'i affiliation is historically prominent in coastal East African Muslim communities.
