Shah Abbas I

Shah Abbas I ruled the Safavid Empire from 1588 to 1629. He strengthened royal authority, expanded Safavid territory, and made Isfahan his capital.

Safavid Iran: A Persianate empire ruled by the Safavid dynasty from 1501 to 1736. Abbas's reign marked the Safavid Empire's political and cultural high point.
Qizilbash: Tribal military followers who helped establish and sustain Safavid rule in Iran. Their political power challenged the authority Abbas sought to centralize.

Battle of Herat (1598): A Safavid victory over Uzbek forces at Herat in 1598. The victory ended Uzbek control of Khorasan and strengthened Abbas's eastern frontier.
Imam-Quli Khan: A Safavid military commander and governor who served under Shah Abbas I. He led campaigns in the Persian Gulf, including the capture of Hormuz.
