Shoot-and-scoot

Shoot-and-scoot is a tactic in which a mobile weapon fires and quickly relocates to avoid detection or counterattack, especially counter-battery fire.

Counter-battery fire: Artillery fire directed against enemy artillery positions. Shoot-and-scoot seeks to leave a firing position before this response can reach it.
Self-propelled artillery: Artillery mounted on a motorized vehicle that can move under its own power. Its mobility lets a gun crew leave a firing position without first hitching a separate towing vehicle.
Indirect fire: Fire delivered at a target that cannot be seen directly from the weapon’s position. Shoot-and-scoot commonly follows indirect fire, which lets the gun remain concealed from its target.
Shoot-and-scoot versus shoot-and-hide: A comparison between relocating after firing and remaining in place while concealing a weapon. The defining choice is whether to leave the firing position or rely on concealment there.
Artillery locating radar: Radar that detects artillery projectiles and estimates their launch points. It can reveal a firing position while the weapon is relocating.
Multiple rocket launcher: A mobile artillery system that fires several unguided or guided rockets in a short salvo. Rocket launchers can deliver a brief salvo and relocate before a counterattack.
Artillery: Large-caliber weapons designed to fire munitions over long distances. The tactic is most closely associated with artillery that can fire from concealed positions.
Shoot-and-move: A military tactic of firing and moving to another position, often used by small arms units. It shares the fire-then-relocate pattern but commonly describes maneuver by infantry or other direct-fire forces.
Muzzle flash: A brief burst of light produced at a firearm or gun barrel when propellant gases emerge. It can expose a weapon’s position to observers before it moves.
M109 howitzer: A family of tracked, self-propelled 155 mm howitzers used by many armed forces. This widely used platform combines indirect fire with the mobility the tactic requires.
