Shunzhi Emperor

The third emperor of the Qing dynasty, he ruled China from 1644 to 1661 after the Manchu conquest of Beijing and establishment of Qing rule.

Ming dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 1368 until its collapse in 1644. Its fall opened the way for Shunzhi’s entry into Beijing and Qing rule.
Eight Banners: A system of military, administrative, and social organizations that structured the Manchu state and its armies. Banner institutions supplied the military and political base of Shunzhi’s government.
Wu Sangui: A Ming general who opened Shanhai Pass to Qing forces in 1644 and later rebelled against Qing rule. His alliance helped bring Shunzhi’s forces into China, before his later revolt challenged the dynasty.
Queue order: A Qing decree requiring Han Chinese men to shave the forehead and wear a long braided queue. The policy made submission to Qing authority visible and provoked resistance during conquest.

Grand Secretariat: A central Qing government institution that drafted and processed imperial edicts and state documents. It connected imperial decisions with the bureaucratic machinery inherited from the Ming.
Hong Chengchou: A former Ming official and general who advised the Qing court on governing conquered Chinese territories. His expertise helped the Manchu court administer regions beyond its original homeland.
Qing dynasty: China’s last imperial dynasty, ruled by the Manchus from 1644 to 1912. Shunzhi became the first Qing emperor to govern from Beijing over China proper.
Dorgon: A Qing prince and regent who governed during Shunzhi’s minority and led the 1644 conquest of Beijing. He secured Shunzhi’s throne and exercised power during the emperor’s early reign.
Kangxi Emperor: The fourth Qing emperor, who succeeded Shunzhi in 1661 and ruled until 1722. His accession followed the regency and established the next phase of Qing consolidation.
