Siege of Antioch

The prolonged 1097–1098 siege during the First Crusade, in which crusaders captured Antioch and were then besieged there by a Muslim relief army.

Antioch: An ancient city on the Orontes River, strategically placed between Anatolia and Syria. Its walls and strategic location shaped the siege’s duration and military stakes.
First Crusade: A Western European military expedition that captured Jerusalem in 1099 after beginning in 1096. Antioch was the expedition’s longest and most consequential siege before Jerusalem.
Raymond IV of Toulouse: A powerful Provençal noble who led one of the largest contingents of the First Crusade. He opposed Bohemond’s claim to Antioch and led forces during the campaign.
Principality of Antioch: A crusader state established around Antioch after its capture in 1098. Bohemond’s acquisition of the city created a durable political outcome of the siege.

Battle of Antioch: The July 1098 battle in which crusaders broke out of Antioch and defeated Kerbogha’s army. It ended the counter-siege and secured the crusaders’ hold on the city.
Fulcher of Chartres: A chaplain and chronicler who joined the First Crusade and later wrote its history. His chronicle offers another firsthand account of the campaign’s events.
