Siege of Tobruk

The Siege of Tobruk was a prolonged World War II battle in which Axis forces surrounded the Allied-held Libyan port from April to December 1941. Its defenders resisted repeated attacks until the siege was lifted.

Tobruk perimeter: A system of forts, trenches, minefields, and obstacles defending Tobruk during the 1941 siege. Its defensive positions allowed the garrison to withstand repeated Axis assaults.
Operation Sonnenblume: The German deployment to North Africa in early 1941 to support Italy against British forces. Its forces helped reverse British gains and set the stage for the Tobruk siege.
Leslie Morshead: An Australian general who commanded the Allied garrison at Tobruk during the 1941 siege. He organized the defense and maintained the garrison’s resistance under siege.
Operation Flipper: A British commando operation in November 1941 aimed at disrupting Axis command in North Africa. Its target, Erwin Rommel, was connected to the forces besieging Tobruk.
