Sixteen Kingdoms

The Sixteen Kingdoms was a period in northern China from 304 to 439, marked by competing states amid Western Jin collapse and preceding Northern Wei unification.

Western Jin dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 266 to 316 before collapsing amid civil war and invasions. Its collapse created the political vacuum in which northern successor states arose.
Wu Hu: A traditional Chinese label for five northern non-Han peoples prominent in early medieval Chinese history. The label appears in accounts of the groups whose rulers founded several kingdoms.
Former Zhao: A Xiongnu-led state that ruled parts of northern China from 304 to 329. Its founding in 304 is commonly used to mark the period’s beginning.
Liu Yuan: A Xiongnu leader who founded Former Zhao in 304. His revolt against Jin authority established the first state conventionally included in the period.
Northern and Southern dynasties: A period from 420 to 589 when northern and southern regimes ruled separately in China. Northern Wei unification opened the northern phase of this broader era.
War of the Eight Princes: A series of civil wars among imperial princes that weakened the Western Jin dynasty from 291 to 306. The conflict drained Jin authority just as northern rebellions gathered force.
Xiongnu: A confederation of nomadic peoples that dominated parts of the eastern Eurasian steppe before the fourth century. Xiongnu-descended rulers established some of the earliest states of the period.
Later Zhao: A state founded by Shi Le that dominated much of northern China from 319 to 351. Its expansion illustrates how a military leader could replace an earlier northern regime.
Shi Le: A military leader who founded Later Zhao and became one of the period’s most powerful rulers. His rise from captive and soldier to ruler exemplifies the era’s political upheavals.
Sinicization: The adoption of Chinese language, customs, institutions, or identity by non-Han peoples and regimes. Several northern ruling houses adopted Chinese administrative and cultural practices during and after this era.
