Slavery Abolition Act 1833

A British law that ended slavery across most of the British Empire, with emancipation taking effect on 1 August 1834. It imposed a transitional apprenticeship system and compensated slaveholders.

Apprenticeship system: A labor system that bound people to work for former enslavers after legal emancipation in parts of the British Empire. The Act required many formerly enslaved people to serve former enslavers as apprentices until 1838.
Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade: A British abolitionist organization founded in 1787 to campaign against the transatlantic slave trade. Its organizing helped build the movement that later demanded emancipation throughout the empire.
British Caribbean: Caribbean territories that were British colonies or possessions during the colonial era. These colonies contained most of the empire’s enslaved population affected by the Act.
Slavery Abolition Act 1843: An Indian law that abolished slavery in territories governed by the East India Company, while limiting enforcement mechanisms. It extended legal abolition in British India a decade after the 1833 Act.
Slave compensation: Payments made by governments to slaveholders when slavery was abolished. The British government allocated £20 million to compensate slaveholders, not the people who had been enslaved.
Slave Trade Act 1807: A British law that prohibited the slave trade in the British Empire, while leaving slavery itself legal. It preceded the 1833 Act by ending Britain’s participation in the trade, not enslaved status.
Indentured servitude: A labor system in which people worked for a fixed term under contract, often under coercive conditions. After emancipation, colonial employers recruited indentured laborers as plantation workforces changed.
Emancipation Proclamation: An 1863 United States executive order declaring enslaved people in rebelling states free. It offers a later, wartime route to emancipation distinct from Britain’s parliamentary act.
Emancipation Day: A commemorative day marking the end of slavery in a particular society or jurisdiction. The Act’s provisions took effect on 1 August 1834, a date commemorated across the Caribbean.
Slavery Abolition Act 1794: A French law that abolished slavery in French colonies during the French Revolution. Its earlier, later-reversed abolition provides a comparison with Britain’s 1833 legislation.
