Slope

Slope measures a line’s steepness as vertical change divided by horizontal change. It is the ratio of the change in the dependent variable to the change in the independent variable.

Rise over run: A way to calculate slope by dividing vertical change by horizontal change. This ratio gives slope its basic geometric meaning.
Cartesian coordinate system: A system for locating points by their signed distances from perpendicular axes. Slope compares coordinate changes along these axes.
Rate of change: A measure of how one quantity changes relative to another. Slope is the constant rate of change for a straight-line relationship.
Undefined slope: A slope that cannot be calculated because the horizontal change is zero. Vertical lines have no finite rise-over-run value.
Slope-intercept form: The equation form y = mx + b, where m is slope and b is the y-intercept. It places slope directly in a line’s equation.
Coordinate plane: A two-dimensional plane defined by perpendicular horizontal and vertical axes. Its axes define the horizontal and vertical changes in slope.
Velocity: The rate at which position changes with time, including direction. On a position-time graph, slope represents velocity.
Zero slope: A slope of zero, indicating no vertical change as the horizontal coordinate changes. Horizontal lines are the flat limit of steepness.
Point-slope form: The equation form y − y₁ = m(x − x₁), which specifies a line using its slope and one point. It constructs a line from a known slope and point.
Ordered pair: A pair of numbers used to specify a point’s coordinates, with order determining each coordinate’s role. Two ordered pairs supply the points used to calculate slope.
