Smoke detector

A device that detects airborne smoke particles and usually sounds an alarm to warn occupants of a possible fire.

Photoelectric smoke detector: A smoke detector that uses scattered light to sense airborne particles. Its optical chamber detects smoke particles as they scatter light from a source.
Fire alarm system: A coordinated system of devices that detects fire conditions and signals an alarm. Smoke detectors can operate as components of a building-wide fire alarm system.
