Social housing

Social housing is housing provided or supported by public authorities or nonprofit organizations to meet social needs. It is generally allocated or priced according to rules intended to improve access to secure, affordable homes.

Housing association: A nonprofit organization that provides and manages housing, often with public support or regulation. Housing associations own and manage much of the social housing stock in several countries.
Industrial Revolution: A period of major economic and technological change beginning in the eighteenth century. Rapid urban growth intensified overcrowding and poor housing conditions that prompted reform.
Council housing: Publicly owned housing provided by local authorities, especially in the United Kingdom. It is a major British form of social housing, built and managed by local councils.
Housing affordability: The relationship between housing costs and household resources. Below-market rents can reduce housing cost burdens for eligible households.
Rent regulation: Rules that limit or govern rents charged by landlords. Regulated rents can keep social homes affordable and shape providers’ income.
Public Health Act 1875: A British law that expanded local authority powers over sanitation and unhealthy housing. It strengthened municipal intervention in the conditions that early housing reformers sought to address.
Public housing in the United States: Housing owned and operated by public housing agencies, with federal support in the United States. It is the principal U.S. public provision model, distinct from many nonprofit-led systems.
Residential segregation: The separation of social groups across residential areas. Siting and allocation decisions can either reinforce or reduce patterns of separation.
Housing allocation: The process of deciding who receives available housing and under what conditions. Allocation rules translate social priorities into decisions about access to scarce homes.
Garden city movement: An urban-planning movement promoting self-contained communities with housing, work, and green space. Its planned communities influenced later public housing and urban development.
