Knowra Sodium nitrate Sodium nitrate Sodium nitrate (NaNO₃) is a water-soluble inorganic salt composed of sodium ions and nitrate ions. It is used in fertilizers, food preservation, and industrial processes.
Nitrate ion : The polyatomic anion NO₃⁻, in which nitrogen is bonded to three oxygen atoms. This anion is the part of sodium nitrate that supplies nitrogen to plants and supports oxidation.
Fertilizer : A material added to soil or plants to supply nutrients that support growth. Sodium nitrate supplies readily available nitrate nitrogen to crops.
Caliche : A hardened accumulation of calcium carbonate or other salts formed in soil or sediment. Nitrate-rich caliche deposits in Chile were historically a major source of sodium nitrate.
Potassium nitrate : An inorganic salt, KNO₃, composed of potassium ions and nitrate ions. It is another soluble nitrate used in fertilizers and pyrotechnics, but contains potassium instead of sodium.
Sodium ion : The positively charged ion Na⁺ formed when a sodium atom loses one electron. It balances nitrate’s negative charge and gives the salt its ionic character.
Nitrogen cycle : The movement and transformation of nitrogen among organisms, soils, waters, and the atmosphere. Nitrate from this salt enters the biological nitrogen cycle after agricultural use.
Atacama Desert : A hyperarid region of northern Chile known for exceptionally low rainfall and extensive mineral deposits. Its climate helped preserve the nitrate-rich deposits mined for Chile saltpeter.
Sodium nitrite : An inorganic salt, NaNO₂, composed of sodium ions and nitrite ions. It is chemically related to sodium nitrate but has different uses and toxicological properties.
Solubility : The capacity of a substance to dissolve in a specified solvent under defined conditions. Sodium nitrate dissolves readily in water, enabling fertilizer application and separation by crystallization.
Curing (food preservation) : Food preservation by adding salt, nitrite, nitrate, or related agents to inhibit spoilage and develop characteristic qualities. Sodium nitrate has been used in curing, where microbes can convert nitrate into nitrite.
