Soga clan

The Soga were a powerful aristocratic clan that championed Buddhism and dominated Japanese court politics during the sixth and seventh centuries.

Soga no Iname: A sixth-century Soga leader who served as Ōkimi’s minister and supported Buddhism at court. His Buddhist patronage established the clan’s religious and political position.
Ōomi: A high ministerial title in ancient Japan, held by leading members of the Soga clan. The Soga used this office to exercise authority within the Yamato court.
Mononobe clan: An aristocratic clan associated with military and ritual service that opposed the Soga’s Buddhist policy. Its rivalry with the Soga turned the adoption of Buddhism into a contest for court power.
Isshi Incident: The 645 coup in which Nakatomi no Kamatari and Prince Naka no Ōe killed Soga no Iruka. The coup destroyed the Soga leadership’s hold over the court.
Soga no Umako: A Soga leader who strengthened his clan’s power and helped install Empress Suiko. He made the clan’s court influence decisive and backed Buddhism against Mononobe opposition.
Yamato polity: The early Japanese political order centered on the ruling court in the Yamato region. It was the court system in which the Soga secured their power.
Nakatomi clan: An aristocratic clan responsible for court ritual, later known as the Fujiwara clan’s ancestral house. Its ritual authority placed it among the court families competing with Soga influence.
Taika Reform: A set of seventh-century political changes that strengthened the central authority of the Japanese court. The reforms followed the Soga overthrow and sought to curtail aristocratic clan power.
Soga no Emishi: A Soga leader who wielded power during Empress Kōgyoku’s reign in the seventh century. His dominance and courtly residence became targets during the coup that ended Soga rule.
Uji-kabane system: A system of hereditary clans and status titles that structured ancient Japanese court society. Soga authority rested on its standing as a powerful uji and its hereditary rank.
