Solid oxide fuel cell

A solid oxide fuel cell converts fuel and oxygen into electricity through electrochemical reactions across a ceramic oxide electrolyte, typically at high temperatures.

Oxygen-ion conduction: The movement of oxygen ions through a solid material under an electric field or chemical-potential gradient. The electrolyte carries oxygen ions from the cathode toward the fuel-side anode.
Yttria-stabilized zirconia: Zirconia doped with yttria, widely used as an oxygen-ion-conducting ceramic electrolyte. It is a standard electrolyte material for high-temperature cells.
Combined heat and power: The simultaneous production of electricity and useful heat from one energy system. High-temperature exhaust can serve heating or industrial processes alongside electrical generation.
Proton-exchange membrane fuel cell: A fuel cell that conducts protons through a polymer membrane, generally operating at lower temperatures than ceramic fuel cells. Its lower operating temperature favors rapid starts but requires different catalysts and fuels.
Solid oxide fuel cell degradation: The gradual loss of performance in a solid oxide fuel cell due to chemical, thermal, or mechanical changes. Electrode coarsening, poisoning, and interface damage shorten useful operating life.
Solid oxide electrolyte: A dense ceramic that conducts oxygen ions while limiting electron flow and separating fuel from oxidant. Its ion transport and gas separation enable the cell’s electrochemical circuit.
Perovskite oxide: An oxide with a crystal structure related to calcium titanate, often used in functional ceramics and electrodes. Many solid oxide fuel cell electrodes use perovskite oxides for electronic or mixed conduction.
Micro-CHP: Small-scale combined heat and power designed to supply a building or compact site. Residential systems can use a solid oxide fuel cell’s electricity and recoverable heat.
Molten carbonate fuel cell: A high-temperature fuel cell that transports carbonate ions through a molten carbonate electrolyte. It shares high-temperature operation but uses different ions, electrolytes, and electrode chemistry.
Thermal cycling: Repeated heating and cooling that subjects materials or systems to changing temperatures. Startup and shutdown cycles stress brittle components and can accelerate degradation.
