Somali Republic

The independent Somali state formed on 1 July 1960 by the union of the former British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland. It existed until 1969, when a military coup established a new government.

British Somaliland: A British protectorate in the Horn of Africa that became independent on 26 June 1960 before uniting with Italian Somaliland. It became independent five days before joining the republic.
Constitution of Somalia: The constitution approved by referendum in 1961 that established the Somali Republic’s parliamentary system. It provided the legal framework for governing the united state.
1969 Somali coup d'état: The military seizure of power in Somalia on 21 October 1969, following President Shermarke’s assassination. The coup ended the republic’s elected government and began military rule.
Somaliland: A self-declared independent state in northwestern Somalia, corresponding largely to the former British Somaliland. Its later claim to independence challenges the union’s enduring legitimacy in the north.
Italian Somaliland: An Italian colony and later United Nations trust territory that became independent on 1 July 1960. Its independence coincided with the republic’s formation.
Somali National Assembly: The legislature of the Somali Republic, composed of representatives elected across the country. It joined political representation from the former territories in one national institution.
Somali Democratic Republic: The military-led Somali state established after the 1969 coup and governed under Siad Barre until 1991. It replaced the Somali Republic with a one-party military government.
Federal Republic of Somalia: The internationally recognized federal state established in 2012, replacing Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government. Its federal structure differs from the republic’s centralized parliamentary design.
Somali Youth League: A Somali nationalist political party founded in 1943 that led the push for independence and governed the new republic. Its leaders shaped the political movement that brought the union about.
Aden Abdullah Osman Daar: The first president of the Somali Republic, serving from 1960 to 1967. His presidency led the republic through its first years and peaceful transfer of power.
