Sommerfeld model

The Sommerfeld model extended Bohr’s atomic model by allowing elliptical electron orbits and adding quantum conditions that helped explain fine structure in hydrogen spectra.

Bohr model: An early atomic model in which electrons occupy quantized circular orbits around a nucleus. Sommerfeld retained Bohr’s quantized orbits while extending their permitted shapes and energies.
Niels Bohr: A Danish physicist whose atomic model introduced quantized electron orbits. Sommerfeld developed Bohr’s framework rather than replacing its central quantization idea.
Modern quantum mechanics: The theory describing matter and radiation through quantum states, operators, and probabilistic measurement outcomes. It replaces definite electron trajectories with quantum states and accounts for atomic structure more completely.
Zeeman effect: The splitting of spectral lines when atoms are placed in a magnetic field. Sommerfeld’s expanded quantum numbers helped classify some magnetic spectral patterns.
Sommerfeld quantization: A set of quantum conditions requiring action integrals over periodic motions to be integer multiples of Planck’s constant. These conditions supplied the mathematical rules for Sommerfeld’s added orbital degrees of freedom.
Arnold Sommerfeld: A German theoretical physicist who extended the Bohr atom and trained influential physicists. His mathematical refinements gave the model its name and its expanded orbit rules.
Schrödinger equation: A fundamental equation governing the evolution and allowed energy states of nonrelativistic quantum systems. Its wave solutions superseded Sommerfeld’s prescribed classical-like electron orbits.
Stark effect: The shifting or splitting of atomic spectral lines in an electric field. Its complex patterns exposed limits in early orbit-based quantum models.
Fine structure: Small splittings of atomic spectral lines caused by relativistic effects and electron spin interactions. Sommerfeld’s relativistic orbit energies explained part of hydrogen’s fine-structure splitting.
Hydrogen spectrum: The set of discrete wavelengths emitted or absorbed by hydrogen atoms. Observed spectral details provided the empirical target for Sommerfeld’s refinements.
