Sophists

Sophists were itinerant Greek teachers who taught rhetoric and civic skills, often for payment. They prepared students to argue and participate in public life.

Protagoras: A fifth-century BCE Greek sophist associated with the claim that humans are the measure of all things. His teachings exemplify the Sophists’ interest in knowledge, civic life, and persuasive argument.
Rhetoric: The practice and study of communicating effectively, especially through persuasive speech or writing. Rhetoric was the central skill Sophists taught for assembly, court, and civic life.
Classical Athens: The Greek city-state of Athens during its period of cultural and political prominence in the fifth and fourth centuries BCE. Its civic institutions and cultural wealth created a prominent setting for Sophistic teaching.
Sophistry: Deceptive or specious reasoning presented as persuasive argument. The later negative meaning of the word grew from ancient attacks on Sophistic argument.
Gorgias: A Greek sophist and rhetorician known for his mastery of persuasive speech. His speeches show how Sophists treated language as a powerful instrument of persuasion.
Antilogic: A method of arguing opposing positions on the same question. Protagoras’s association with opposing arguments captures a characteristic Sophistic teaching exercise.
Panhellenic games: Athletic and religious festivals that drew participants and audiences from across the Greek world. Sophists could travel between Greek communities and present their teaching to wide audiences.
Eristic: The practice of arguing chiefly to win disputes rather than establish truth. Plato associates Sophistic teaching with contentious argument, though the terms are not identical.
Hippias of Elis: A Greek sophist known for teaching many subjects and for his claims to broad expertise. His versatility illustrates the breadth of skills some Sophists advertised.
Encomium of Helen: A speech by Gorgias that argues Helen should not be blamed for leaving with Paris. It demonstrates how a Sophist could use structured arguments to reverse a familiar judgment.
