Soviet–Japanese Neutrality Pact

A treaty signed by the Soviet Union and Japan on 13 April 1941, pledging neutrality if either party became involved in war with a third power. It remained in force until the Soviet Union declared war on Japan in August 1945.

Moscow Declaration: A 1943 Allied declaration that called for Japan’s unconditional surrender and promised the return of territories Japan had taken from Russia. Its territorial terms later informed the Soviet position when the pact ended.
Battle of Khalkhin Gol: A 1939 Soviet–Mongolian victory over Japanese forces at a disputed border in Mongolia. Japan’s defeat helped make a northern war with the Soviet Union less attractive.
Battle of Moscow: The 1941–1942 Soviet defense of Moscow against the German invasion. The pact helped reduce the threat of a Japanese attack while the Soviet Union fought Germany.
German–Japanese Anti-Comintern Pact: A 1936 agreement between Germany and Japan directed against the Communist International and Soviet influence. Unlike this pact, it aligned Japan with a power that the Soviet Union later fought.
Soviet–Japanese Neutrality Pact denunciation: The Soviet Union’s 1945 notice that it would not renew its neutrality agreement with Japan. The 1945 notice preceded the Soviet declaration of war, though Moscow treated the pact as still binding until its term expired.
Nomonhan Incident: The Japanese name for the 1939 border conflict known in the Soviet Union as the Battle of Khalkhin Gol. The divergent names reflect the conflict’s disputed border setting and national perspectives.
Siberian divisions: Soviet formations transferred from the Far East to the western front during the Second World War. The pact eased Soviet fears of a simultaneous Japanese offensive, enabling some eastern forces to move west.
German–Japanese–Italian Tripartite Pact: The 1940 alliance among Germany, Japan, and Italy, intended to deter the United States from entering the war. Its military alignment differed from the bilateral promise of neutrality toward the Soviet Union.
Soviet–Japanese War: The August 1945 Soviet campaign against Japanese forces in Manchuria, Korea, and nearby territories. The campaign began as the Soviet Union entered the war against Japan.
German–Soviet Nonaggression Pact: A 1939 agreement in which Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union pledged not to attack one another. Its secret protocol changed the European balance while Japan was negotiating with Moscow.
