Sovietization

Sovietization is the adoption of Soviet political, economic, and social institutions by another state, often under Soviet influence or control.

Communist party-state: A political system in which a communist party directs state institutions and claims a leading role in society. Sovietization placed communist parties at the center of government and public life.
Sovietization of Eastern Europe: The postwar establishment of Soviet-aligned political and economic systems across Eastern European states. This was the largest regional wave of Sovietization outside the Soviet Union.
October Revolution: The Bolshevik seizure of power in Russia in October 1917. It created the revolutionary government whose institutions later became models for Sovietization.
Finlandization: A policy of accommodating a powerful neighboring state while retaining domestic sovereignty and a distinct political system. Finland’s accommodation of the USSR did not entail adoption of Soviet institutions.
Warsaw Pact: A 1955 military alliance led by the Soviet Union and including several Eastern European socialist states. It institutionalized the military alignment that accompanied Sovietization in much of Eastern Europe.
One-party state: A political system in which one party monopolizes legal political power. Communist rule commonly eliminated meaningful competition from other parties.
Sovietization of the Baltic states: The imposition of Soviet rule and institutions in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania after their incorporation into the USSR. The Baltic case involved annexation, rather than merely alignment with Moscow.
Russian Civil War: The conflict from 1917 to 1922 between Bolshevik forces and their varied opponents in the former Russian Empire. Bolshevik victory consolidated the state that exported its political model.
Titoism: The independent form of communist rule developed in Yugoslavia under Josip Broz Tito. Yugoslavia remained communist but rejected Soviet political control after its 1948 split with Stalin.
Comecon: The Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, an organization coordinating economic cooperation among socialist states from 1949 to 1991. It tied national economies to a Soviet-led system of planning and exchange.
