Space suit

A pressurized garment that protects a person from vacuum, temperature extremes, and other hazards of spaceflight. It supplies oxygen, removes carbon dioxide, and supports movement outside a spacecraft.

Pressure garment: A wearable enclosure that maintains pressure around the body in a low-pressure environment. Its sealed layers hold life-sustaining pressure around the astronaut.
Vacuum: A region with pressure far below atmospheric pressure, containing very few particles. The suit must prevent bodily fluids and gases from escaping into near-vacuum.
Extravehicular activity: Work performed by an astronaut outside a spacecraft while wearing a spacesuit. Spacewalks are the suit’s defining operational use.
Intra-vehicular activity suit: A pressure suit intended for use inside a spacecraft, especially during launch, landing, or cabin depressurization. It protects in emergencies but is not built for sustained exterior work.
Wiley Post: An American aviator who used a pressurized flight suit for high-altitude flights in the 1930s. His flights demonstrated that wearable pressure protection could enable extreme-altitude flight.
Portable Life Support System: A wearable system that supplies breathing gas and regulates an astronaut’s environment during a spacewalk. The backpack supplies oxygen, removes carbon dioxide, and manages cooling.
Atmospheric pressure: The force per unit area exerted by the weight and motion of a planet’s atmosphere. Suit pressure replaces the external pressure absent in space.
Apollo A7L: The family of pressure suits worn by Apollo astronauts during lunar missions. Its lunar configuration protected astronauts while they explored the Moon.
Diving suit: A garment that protects a diver from water, pressure, temperature, or other underwater hazards. Water pressure and heat transfer create a different environment from space vacuum.
Emilio Herrera Linares: A Spanish engineer and aviator who designed an early sealed pressure suit for high-altitude flight. His 1930s design anticipated features later used in astronaut suits.
