Spanish Florida

Spanish Florida was a Spanish colonial territory in southeastern North America, established in the sixteenth century. Spain ceded it to Britain in 1763, regained it in 1783, and transferred it to the United States in 1821.

Juan Ponce de León: A Spanish explorer who led the 1513 expedition that reached the coast of what is now Florida. His expedition established Spain’s early claim to the region later called Florida.
Spanish missions in Florida: Catholic settlements established by Spanish clergy among Indigenous communities in Florida. Missions extended Spanish influence beyond coastal forts and towns.
Siege of St. Augustine (1702): An English colonial assault on Spanish St. Augustine during Queen Anne’s War that failed to capture the town. The siege exposed the vulnerability of Spain’s northern stronghold to English Carolina.
Seminole: An Indigenous people formed in the southeastern United States from diverse communities, especially during the eighteenth century. Seminole communities emerged as Spanish Florida’s later colonial order weakened.
New Spain: The Spanish viceroyalty that governed much of Spain’s American empire from the sixteenth through early nineteenth centuries. Spanish Florida was a remote northern possession connected to New Spain’s imperial administration.
Spanish colonization of the Americas: Spain’s conquest, settlement, and rule of territories across the Americas from the late fifteenth century onward. Florida was one northern frontier of Spain’s wider American empire.
Presidio: A fortified military settlement used by Spain to secure colonial territory and support nearby communities. Presidios supplied the defensive framework for Spanish rule in Florida.
Yamasee War: A 1715–1717 conflict in which Indigenous groups and enslaved Africans attacked English Carolina settlements. The conflict altered regional alliances and drew some refugees toward Spanish Florida.
Black Seminoles: People of African descent associated with Seminole communities, including descendants of those who sought freedom in Spanish Florida. Spanish Florida’s refuge policies connected African freedom seekers with Indigenous allies.
Thirteen Colonies: The British colonies on the Atlantic coast of North America that declared independence in 1776. Their expansion and conflicts with Spain shaped Florida’s borders and population movements.
