Spiral of silence

The spiral of silence is a theory that people who fear social isolation may withhold opinions they perceive as unpopular, making the apparent majority seem larger.

Fear of isolation: Anxiety about exclusion or rejection by a group. The theory identifies this fear as a motive for withholding minority opinions.
Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann: A German political scientist who developed and popularized the spiral of silence theory. She formulated the theory through research on opinion formation and electoral behavior.
