Stroke play

Stroke play is a golf scoring format in which each player’s score is the total number of strokes taken over the course, with the lowest score winning.

Golf stroke: A golf stroke is a forward movement of the club made to strike the ball. Each stroke contributes to the player’s cumulative score.
Match play: Match play is a golf format in which competitors win, lose, or halve individual holes. It awards the contest by holes won, not by the lowest total strokes.
The Masters Tournament: The Masters Tournament is an annual men’s professional golf major held at Augusta National Golf Club. Its 72-hole individual championship is decided by the lowest total strokes.
Medal play: Medal play is an older name for golf competition decided by the fewest total strokes. The name reflects the historic award for the lowest stroke total.
Gross score: A gross score is the total strokes taken before handicap adjustments. Stroke-play results may be ranked by this unadjusted total.
Four-ball golf: Four-ball golf is a team format in which each player plays a ball and the lower partner score counts on each hole. Its team score selects one player’s hole result instead of adding every partner’s strokes.
U.S. Open (golf): The U.S. Open is an annual men’s professional golf championship organized by the United States Golf Association. Its demanding course setup tests scoring across four stroke-play rounds.
