Substituent

A substituent is an atom or group of atoms attached to a parent molecule in place of a hydrogen atom or another group. Its identity and position help determine the molecule’s structure and properties.

Molecular structure: The arrangement of atoms and bonds in a molecule. A substituent is one part of a molecule’s overall structure.
Inductive effect: A shift of electron density through sigma bonds caused by electronegativity differences or charge. Electronegative substituents can withdraw electron density through a carbon framework.
Methyl group: An alkyl group consisting of one carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms. A methyl group is a common, simple carbon substituent.
Alkyl group: A group derived from an alkane by removing one hydrogen atom. An alkyl group is one common type of substituent, not a synonym for every substituent.
Covalent bond: A chemical bond formed when atoms share electron pairs. Covalent bonds connect substituents to their parent molecules.
Mesomeric effect: Electron donation or withdrawal through conjugation, described using resonance structures. Conjugated substituents can redistribute electrons beyond their point of attachment.
Halogen substituent: A halogen atom attached to a molecular framework as a substituent. Halogen substituents can alter polarity, reactivity, and biological activity.
Radical (chemistry): An atom or molecule with one or more unpaired electrons. A substituent need not be a radical; attachment to a molecule does not imply unpaired electrons.
Parent hydride: A hydride selected as the structural parent in systematic chemical nomenclature. Substituents are named and located relative to a chosen parent structure.
Steric hindrance: Reduced reactivity or altered geometry caused by atoms or groups crowding one another in space. Bulky substituents can block approach to a reactive site.
