Subtext

Subtext is meaning implied beneath the explicit words of a work. It emerges through context, omission, contradiction, tone, and other indirect cues.

Implicature: Meaning conveyed indirectly through an utterance rather than stated outright. Subtext often depends on implications that exceed a character’s literal words.
Context: The circumstances surrounding an event, statement, or work that shape its interpretation. A line’s implication can change with its situation, history, or audience.
Subtext in acting: The unspoken intention or emotion an actor conveys beneath a character’s dialogue. Performance can make a line’s concealed intention perceptible through gesture, timing, and delivery.
Text: The explicit words and signs that make up a written or spoken work. Subtext is inferred beneath this explicit surface rather than identical to it.
Irony: A figure of speech or situation in which an apparent meaning differs from the intended or actual one. A mismatch between words and intended meaning can make subtext legible.
Characterization: The ways a narrative presents and develops the people or figures in it. A character’s established motives help distinguish a sincere statement from a veiled one.
Screenwriting: The craft of writing scripts for films and other screen productions. Screenwriters often use action and dialogue to imply what characters cannot say.
Theme: A central subject or recurring idea explored by a work. A theme is a broad concern; subtext is an indirect layer of meaning.
Dramatic irony: A dramatic effect in which an audience knows something that one or more characters do not. The audience’s extra knowledge can reveal implications hidden from characters.
Tone: The attitude or emotional quality conveyed by a speaker, narrator, or work. Tone can signal that a line means more—or something different—than its wording.
