Tabriz

Tabriz is a city in northwestern Iran and the capital of East Azerbaijan province. It has long been a major center of trade and culture.

Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex: A large covered bazaar in Tabriz, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historic architecture and commercial role. Its interconnected halls embody the trade networks that made Tabriz prosperous.
Ilkhanate: A Mongol dynasty that ruled much of Iran and neighboring lands from the thirteenth to the fourteenth century. Tabriz became the Ilkhanate’s capital and a major center of its imperial administration.
Shah Ismail I: The founder of the Safavid dynasty, who ruled Iran from 1501 to 1524. He made Tabriz his first capital after establishing Safavid rule.
East Azerbaijan Province: A province in northwestern Iran, bordering Armenia, Azerbaijan, and several Iranian provinces. Tabriz is its capital and principal urban center.
Silk Road: A network of overland and maritime trade routes that connected East Asia with western Asia, Africa, and Europe. Tabriz prospered as a junction in long-distance commerce linking these regions.
Blue Mosque of Tabriz: A fifteenth-century mosque in Tabriz famed for its blue glazed tilework. Its surviving ornament marks the city’s artistic achievements under the Qara Qoyunlu.
Safavid dynasty: An Iranian dynasty that ruled from 1501 to 1736 and established Twelver Shiism as the state religion. Shah Ismail I made Tabriz the Safavid capital before the court moved east.
Abbas Mirza: A Qajar prince and military reformer who led Persian forces against Russia in the early nineteenth century. He governed from Tabriz and used the city as a base for military modernization.
Iranian Azerbaijan: The northwestern region of Iran where Azerbaijani Turkic is widely spoken alongside Persian. Tabriz is one of the region’s largest cultural and economic centers.
Iranian Constitutionalism: The movement in Iran to limit monarchical power through a constitution and representative institutions. Tabriz’s resistance helped sustain the constitutional movement during a royalist crackdown.
