Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is a white-marble mausoleum in Agra, India, commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
Mughal architecture: The architectural tradition of the Mughal Empire, blending Persian, Indian, and Central Asian forms. The mausoleum brings this tradition to its most renowned expression.
Shah Jahan: The fifth Mughal emperor, who ruled from 1628 to 1658 and commissioned major architectural works. He ordered the mausoleum after Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631.
Yamuna River: A major river of northern India, also called the Jumna, that flows through Agra. The mausoleum stands on its bank, where the river forms the garden’s rear boundary.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: A place recognized under an international convention for cultural or natural heritage of outstanding universal value. The Taj Mahal was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1983.
Mughal imperial ideology: The political ideas and visual practices through which Mughal rulers represented sovereignty and dynastic authority. The costly tomb expressed Shah Jahan’s authority as well as personal remembrance.
