Tectonic subsidence

Tectonic subsidence is the downward movement of Earth’s surface caused by deformation of the crust or lithosphere. It can occur through faulting, crustal stretching, loading, or broader plate-scale processes.

Normal fault: A dip-slip fault in which the hanging wall moves downward relative to the footwall. Movement on normal faults can drop crustal blocks and create subsiding basins.
Tectonics: The processes and structures that shape Earth’s lithosphere through plate motion and deformation. Tectonic subsidence is one vertical outcome of lithospheric deformation.
Sedimentary basin: A region of long-term subsidence where sediments accumulate and are preserved. Many sedimentary basins form as tectonic subsidence creates space for sediment.
Glacial isostatic adjustment: The delayed deformation of Earth’s crust and mantle in response to growth and melting of ice sheets. It causes vertical land motion through changing ice loads rather than tectonic deformation.
Graben: An elongated crustal block that has subsided between two roughly parallel faults. A graben is a clear structural expression of fault-driven tectonic subsidence.
Lithosphere: Earth’s rigid outer shell, comprising the crust and the uppermost mantle. Its strength and thickness govern how tectonic forces deform and lower the surface.
Basin analysis: The study of a basin’s formation, subsidence history, sediment fill, and thermal evolution. Subsidence histories help reconstruct the tectonic evolution of sedimentary basins.
Groundwater extraction: The removal of groundwater from aquifers for uses such as irrigation and municipal supply. Excessive extraction can compact aquifers and lower the land surface without tectonic forces.
Half-graben: An asymmetric basin formed mainly by displacement on one major normal fault. Its tilted basin floor records uneven subsidence along a fault system.
Vertical land motion: Upward or downward movement of Earth’s surface relative to a reference level. Tectonic subsidence is one cause of vertical land motion, alongside nontectonic processes.
