Terra Nova Expedition

Robert Falcon Scott’s British Antarctic expedition of 1910–1913 sought to reach the South Pole and conduct scientific research. Its polar party reached the Pole in January 1912, after Roald Amundsen’s Norwegian expedition.

Terra Nova: A former whaling ship that carried Scott’s expedition to Antarctica and served as its principal support vessel. The expedition took its name from the ship that transported its people and supplies.
Ross Ice Shelf: A vast floating ice shelf in Antarctica, bordering the Ross Sea. Scott’s route crossed this shelf between Cape Evans and the polar plateau.
Robert Falcon Scott: A British naval officer and Antarctic explorer who led the Terra Nova Expedition. Scott commanded the expedition and the five-man party that reached the Pole.
Antarctic exploration: The exploration of Antarctica’s geography, environment, and resources by expeditions and research programs. The Terra Nova voyage combined geographical exploration with a broad program of Antarctic science.

Edward Wilson: A British physician, naturalist, and artist who joined Scott’s Antarctic expeditions. Wilson travelled with Scott to the Pole and died with the returning party.
Antarctic science: Scientific research concerning Antarctica, its environments, climate, geology, and life. The expedition’s scientific work continued even as its polar journey became the dominant story.
Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station: A United States research station located at the geographic South Pole. The station now occupies the pole that Scott’s party reached after Amundsen.
One Ton Depot: A major supply depot Scott’s expedition placed on the Ross Ice Shelf for the return journey. The polar party’s failure to reach this depot contributed to its final lack of supplies.
