The Clouds

The Clouds is a comedy by Aristophanes, first produced in 423 BCE, that satirizes Socrates, sophistry, and intellectual fashions in classical Athens.

Strepsiades: An indebted Athenian farmer who enrolls in Socrates’ school to learn how to evade his creditors. His desperate attempt to master persuasive speech drives the play’s action.
Aristophanes: An Athenian comic playwright of the fifth century BCE whose surviving plays include The Clouds. He shaped Socrates into a comic target for contemporary audiences.
The Clouds (chorus): The chorus of cloud divinities in Aristophanes’ comedy, presented as the true gods of its Thinkery. Their entrance gives the play its title and replaces conventional divine authority with comic novelty.
