Theban Necropolis

The Theban Necropolis is the ancient cemetery region on the Nile’s west bank opposite Thebes, containing royal and private tombs and mortuary temples.

Valley of the Kings: A royal burial valley near Thebes containing tombs of New Kingdom pharaohs. Its royal tombs form the necropolis’s best-known concentration.
KV62: The tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, discovered largely intact in 1922. Its discovery made the necropolis internationally famous.

New Kingdom: The period of ancient Egyptian history from about 1550 to 1070 BCE. Many of the necropolis’s most famous royal tombs date to this period.
Theban Mapping Project: A project documenting and mapping the tombs and monuments of the Theban necropolis. Its records help researchers locate and compare sites across the region.
Luxor Temple: An ancient Egyptian temple in the center of modern Luxor, on the east bank of the Nile. It connects the west-bank necropolis with Thebes’s eastern religious landscape.
