Thionyl chloride

Thionyl chloride (SOCl₂) is a reactive inorganic compound that converts carboxylic acids into acyl chlorides and alcohols into alkyl chlorides, releasing gaseous byproducts.

Acyl chloride: A carboxylic acid derivative in which the hydroxyl group is replaced by chlorine. Thionyl chloride converts carboxylic acids into this reactive product.
Alkyl chloride: An organic compound in which chlorine is bonded to a saturated carbon atom. Thionyl chloride converts alcohols into these compounds by replacing hydroxyl groups.
Sulfur(IV) oxide: A sulfur oxide in which sulfur has oxidation state +4; thionyl chloride is its chlorinated analogue. The SO unit in thionyl chloride is related to this oxide framework.
Phosphorus tribromide: A phosphorus halide, PBr₃, used chiefly to convert alcohols into alkyl bromides. It performs analogous alcohol substitution but installs bromine rather than chlorine.
Alcohol: An organic compound whose hydroxyl group is bonded to a saturated carbon atom. Its hydroxyl group can be replaced by chlorine using thionyl chloride.
Carboxylic acid: An organic compound containing a carboxyl group, –COOH. Thionyl chloride is commonly used to transform this functional group into an acyl chloride.
Covalent bond: A chemical bond formed by sharing electron pairs between atoms. The S–O and S–Cl bonds shape thionyl chloride’s molecular structure and reactivity.
Phosphorus pentachloride: A phosphorus chloride, PCl₅, used as a chlorinating and dehydrating reagent. It can convert acids and alcohols to chlorinated products but leaves phosphorus-containing byproducts.
Nucleophilic acyl substitution: A reaction in which a nucleophile replaces a leaving group attached to an acyl carbon. Acyl chloride formation proceeds through substitution at the carboxyl-derived carbon.
Chlorination: A chemical process that introduces chlorine atoms or chlorine-containing groups into a substance. Thionyl chloride is a reagent for chlorinating organic substrates without using elemental chlorine.
