Third Anglo-Maratha War

The 1817–1818 conflict between the Maratha Confederacy and the British East India Company ended Maratha sovereignty and established Company dominance across much of India.

Battle of Khadki: A 1817 battle near Pune in which Company forces defeated the Peshwa’s army. The defeat drove the Peshwa from Pune and opened the campaign against his rule.
Treaty of Bassein: The 1802 agreement that made Peshwa Baji Rao II accept a Company subsidiary alliance. Its terms had already made the Peshwa dependent on Company protection before the final war.
John Malcolm: A British officer and administrator who negotiated with Maratha rulers and served in the central Indian campaigns. His negotiations helped secure settlements that followed Company victories.
Peshwa: The chief ministerial office that became the hereditary leadership of the Maratha Confederacy. The office was abolished after the Company defeated and deposed Baji Rao II.
Battle of Koregaon: A 1818 battle in which a small Company force resisted a much larger army associated with the Peshwa. Its resistance checked the Peshwa’s forces during their retreat through western India.
Second Anglo-Maratha War: The 1803–1805 war between the Company and several Maratha powers. Its settlement left Maratha rulers weakened but did not resolve their rivalry with the Company.
Hastings: The Governor-General of India from 1813 to 1823, who directed Company policy during the war. His strategy combined the Pindari campaign with pressure on Maratha states.
Bombay Presidency: A major administrative division of British India that expanded under Company rule along the western coast. The Company annexed Peshwa territories that strengthened its western Indian holdings.
Battle of Sitabuldi: A 1817 battle near Nagpur in which Company troops defeated the army of the Bhonsle ruler. The defeat weakened the Bhonsle branch of the confederacy early in the war.
Pindari War: The Company’s 1817–1818 campaign against irregular mounted groups operating across central India. Company forces mobilized against the Pindaris in a campaign that became entangled with Maratha resistance.
