Thirty Years' War

A series of European conflicts fought from 1618 to 1648, centered in the Holy Roman Empire and involving Catholic and Protestant powers. It ended with the Peace of Westphalia.

Defenestration of Prague (1618): The 1618 incident in which Protestant nobles threw two imperial officials and their secretary from a castle window in Prague. This revolt against Habsburg authority helped trigger the war.
Battle of Breitenfeld (1631): A 1631 battle in which Swedish forces and their Saxon allies defeated an imperial army near Leipzig. The victory established Sweden as a major force in the Empire.
Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor: Holy Roman Emperor from 1619 to 1637, whose policies sought to strengthen Habsburg and Catholic authority. His efforts to consolidate imperial power provoked resistance from Protestant estates.
Peace of Augsburg: The 1555 settlement that let rulers in the Holy Roman Empire choose between Catholicism and Lutheranism for their territories. Westphalia revised this earlier settlement by recognizing additional religious arrangements.
Eighty Years' War: The revolt of the Low Countries against Spanish rule, fought from 1568 to 1648. It overlapped with the Thirty Years' War and ended in the same year, but had distinct origins.
Bohemian Revolt: An uprising of Bohemian estates against Habsburg rule from 1618 to 1620. Its defeat at White Mountain began the conflict's first major phase.

Augsburg Interim: A 1548 imperial decree that temporarily imposed Catholic practices on Protestant territories after the Schmalkaldic War. Its memory informed fears of renewed religious coercion during the conflict.
French Wars of Religion: A series of French civil wars between Catholics and Protestants, fought mainly from 1562 to 1598. They were earlier confessional conflicts within France, unlike the later struggle centered in the Empire.
