Treaty of Münster

The 1648 peace treaty between Spain and the Dutch Republic that recognized Dutch independence and ended the Eighty Years’ War.

Eighty Years’ War: The conflict between the Spanish Habsburgs and the Dutch rebels, fought from 1568 to 1648. Its conclusion was the central purpose of the Spanish-Dutch settlement.
Dutch Republic: A confederation of seven northern Netherlands provinces that existed from 1588 to 1795. The treaty recognized this state as free and sovereign.
Dutch Golden Age: A period of exceptional economic, cultural, and scientific influence in the Dutch Republic, chiefly during the seventeenth century. Independence secured the political setting in which the Republic’s seventeenth-century influence expanded.
Treaty of Osnabrück: A 1648 treaty between the Holy Roman Emperor and Sweden that formed part of the Peace of Westphalia. It was a separate Westphalian agreement, not the Spanish-Dutch treaty signed at Münster.
Dutch Revolt: The rebellion of the Low Countries against Spanish Habsburg rule, beginning in 1568. The decades-long revolt created the political question the treaty settled.
Philip IV of Spain: King of Spain from 1621 to 1665 and ruler during the treaty negotiations. His government accepted Dutch independence through the agreement.
Dutch colonial empire: The overseas trading posts and territories controlled by the Dutch Republic and its chartered companies. The peace left Spain and the Republic to compete as separate imperial and commercial powers.
Treaty of the Pyrenees: The 1659 treaty that ended the Franco-Spanish War and settled terms between France and Spain. Unlike the 1648 agreement, it ended Spain’s war with France rather than its war with the Dutch.
Union of Utrecht: A 1579 alliance of northern Dutch provinces that formed the political foundation of the Dutch Republic. It helped establish the rebel union Spain ultimately recognized as independent.
States General of the Netherlands: The governing assembly of the Dutch Republic, representing its constituent provinces. Dutch representatives negotiated and ratified the settlement on behalf of the Republic.
