Thomas Nast

Thomas Nast (1840–1902) was an American political cartoonist whose images shaped public views of politicians and helped popularize the Republican elephant, Democratic donkey, and modern Santa Claus.

Republican Party elephant: An elephant symbol associated with the Republican Party in the United States. Nast’s 1874 cartoon helped establish the elephant as a Republican emblem.
