Three Gorges

The Three Gorges are Qutang, Wu, and Xiling, a series of steep-sided gorges along the Yangtze River in China.

Qutang Gorge: The shortest and narrowest of the Three Gorges, a steep-sided passage on the Yangtze River. Its constricted cliffs form the western entrance to the Three Gorges.
Yangtze River: Asia’s longest river, flowing from the Tibetan Plateau across China to the East China Sea. The Three Gorges are a deeply incised reach of its course.
Yangtze River basin: The drainage region whose waters flow into the Yangtze River and its tributaries. The gorges connect the river’s upper reaches with the basin’s densely settled middle reaches.
Yangtze River transport: The movement of people and goods along the Yangtze River by water and connecting infrastructure. The gorges form a natural bottleneck on one of China’s major inland transport routes.
Three Gorges Dam relocation: The resettlement of more than a million people displaced by the Three Gorges Dam and reservoir. Reservoir expansion submerged towns and farmland throughout the gorge region.
Wu Gorge: A long Yangtze gorge known for its forested peaks and steep slopes. Its winding reaches and striking peaks distinguish the middle gorge.
Fluvial incision: The lowering of a river channel as flowing water erodes the bed beneath it. River incision helps explain how the Yangtze cut through resistant mountain terrain.
Ba people: An ancient people who inhabited parts of present-day Sichuan and Chongqing in China. Ba communities lived in the wider Three Gorges region before imperial expansion.
Three Gorges Reservoir: The large reservoir formed upstream of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. Its rising water levels changed navigation and settlement along the gorge shores.
Three Gorges cultural heritage: Archaeological sites, historic buildings, and cultural traditions associated with the Three Gorges region. Flooding and construction prompted extensive documentation and relocation of heritage sites.
