Through ball

A through ball is a pass played into space behind defenders for a teammate to run onto, often exploiting a gap in the defensive line.

Offside (association football): An association football rule that penalizes an attacker who is illegally positioned when a teammate plays the ball. The passer must release the ball before the runner becomes offside.
Long ball: A long pass that bypasses nearby players to reach a distant teammate or area of the field. Unlike a direct long ball, a through ball targets space behind defenders for a runner.
Pelé: Brazilian footballer Pelé, renowned for his goal scoring and creative play across several decades. His pass to Carlos Alberto in the 1970 World Cup final is a celebrated example of a defense-splitting pass.

Back pass: A pass played toward a teammate positioned closer to the passer's own goal. A back pass retreats from pressure instead of attacking space behind the defense.
Third-man run: An attacking movement in which a player runs beyond the receiver to collect a pass from a third teammate. A third runner can receive the ball after the initial pass draws defenders toward the first receiver.
Cutback (association football): A pass played backward from near the goal line toward teammates arriving in a central area. A cutback targets arriving attackers rather than sending one behind the defense.
