Tiberias

Tiberias is a city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel. Founded in the first century CE, it became a major center of Jewish life and scholarship.

Herod Antipas: Herod Antipas ruled Galilee and Perea as a Roman client tetrarch from 4 BCE to 39 CE. He founded Tiberias during his rule and named it for the emperor Tiberius.
Jerusalem Talmud: The Jerusalem Talmud is a late antique compilation of rabbinic discussions of Jewish law and scripture. Its formation is associated with rabbinic academies in Tiberias and other Galilean towns.
Hammat Tiberias: Hammat Tiberias is an archaeological site south of the city, known for hot springs and ancient synagogues. Its synagogue mosaics document Jewish communal life near ancient Tiberias.
Capernaum: Capernaum is an ancient settlement on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee. It was another significant lakeside settlement in the region around Tiberias.
Tiberius: Tiberius was Roman emperor from 14 to 37 CE, succeeding Augustus. The city’s name honored the emperor under whom it was founded.
Masoretes: The Masoretes were Jewish scribes who preserved and annotated the Hebrew Bible’s text and pronunciation. Tiberias was a major center of the Masoretic tradition.
Tiberias Synagogue: The Tiberias Synagogue is a late antique synagogue site with a mosaic floor bearing Jewish symbols. Its remains offer direct evidence of the city’s ancient Jewish community.
Magdala: Magdala is an ancient Galilean town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Its archaeological remains show the dense settlement pattern along Tiberias’s lakeshore.
Roman Judea: Roman Judea was the territory in the southern Levant governed by Rome and its client rulers. Tiberias emerged within Rome’s system of client kingdoms and provincial rule.
Tiberian vocalization: Tiberian vocalization is a system of marks recording the vowels and cantillation of Biblical Hebrew. This influential reading system was developed and transmitted by Tiberian scholars.
