Timar

A grant of state revenue in the Ottoman Empire assigned in return for military or administrative service. It generally conveyed the right to collect specified taxes, not ownership of the land.

Sipahi: A mounted soldier who served in the Ottoman cavalry, often supported by revenue from a timar. Timar income maintained the provincial cavalry expected to campaign for the sultan.
Ottoman Empire: A Eurasian empire that ruled from the late thirteenth century until its dissolution after World War I. The empire developed and administered the timar system across its provinces.
Ottoman classical army: The military forces organized by the Ottoman state during its classical period. Timar revenues supported provincial cavalry that complemented the sultan’s household troops.

Waqf: An endowment under Islamic law whose assets support designated religious or charitable purposes. Waqf revenues served endowed purposes, not a timar-holder’s service obligations.
Ottoman land tenure: The Ottoman system governing landholding, state claims, and agricultural revenues. Timar grants operated within a system where much land remained under state control.
Tımar system in the Byzantine Empire: Pronoia was a Byzantine grant of revenue or rights, often linked to service. Pronoia offers a useful comparison, though its institutions and legal basis differed from timar.
