Titoism

Titoism was the communist system developed in Yugoslavia under Josip Broz Tito. It combined one-party rule with independence from Soviet control, workers’ self-management, and nonalignment.

Workers’ self-management: A system in which workers participate through elected councils in managing enterprises and allocating some resources. Yugoslav enterprises used elected workers’ councils as Titoism’s defining alternative to Soviet-style state management.
Tito–Stalin split: The 1948 rupture between Yugoslavia and the Soviet-led communist bloc. The split forced Yugoslavia to justify a socialist path outside Soviet authority.
Stalinism: The political system associated with Joseph Stalin, marked by centralized party rule, coercive collectivization, and a personality cult. Titoism rejected Soviet control while preserving one-party communist government.
Bandung Conference: The 1955 meeting of Asian and African states that promoted anticolonial cooperation and international independence. The conference helped create the diplomatic setting for Yugoslavia’s partnerships beyond the Cold War blocs.
League of Communists of Yugoslavia: The ruling communist party that governed Yugoslavia from 1945 until the country’s breakup. The party retained political monopoly even as economic management was decentralized.
Josip Broz Tito: The Yugoslav communist leader who ruled the country from the Second World War until his death in 1980. Tito shaped the system’s institutions and embodied its political independence.
Soviet Union: A socialist federation led by the Communist Party from 1922 until its dissolution in 1991. Yugoslavia’s refusal of subordination to Moscow defined its distinct political course.
Belgrade Conference of 1961: The first summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, held in Belgrade in 1961. Hosting the summit made Yugoslavia a central organizer of nonalignment.
Yugoslav economy: The economic system of Yugoslavia, combining social ownership, market mechanisms, and federal planning. Its mixture of planning and market exchange put self-management into practice.
Yugoslav Partisans: The communist-led resistance movement that fought Axis occupation and rival forces in Yugoslavia during the Second World War. Their wartime victory gave Tito’s movement domestic power independent of Soviet military occupation.
