Tobacco control

Tobacco control comprises public policies and interventions intended to reduce tobacco use and the health harms caused by tobacco products.

WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control: A 2003 international treaty that commits parties to implement measures limiting tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke. It provides a global framework for coordinating national tobacco-control measures.
Price elasticity of demand: A measure of how much the quantity demanded of a good changes when its price changes. It explains why tobacco tax increases can reduce consumption, especially among young people.
Richard Doll: A British epidemiologist whose research helped establish the link between smoking and lung cancer. His cohort studies supplied influential evidence behind tobacco-control policies.
Tobacco-related disease: Illness and premature death caused or worsened by exposure to tobacco products. Preventing these outcomes is the central public-health aim of tobacco control.
Tobacco taxation: The use of taxes on tobacco products to raise prices, generate revenue, and reduce consumption. Higher tobacco prices are a central policy lever for discouraging use.
Secondhand smoke: Smoke from burning tobacco products and smoke exhaled by tobacco users, inhaled by other people. Reducing involuntary exposure is a direct health goal of smoke-free policies.
Austin Bradford Hill: A British medical statistician who advanced epidemiological methods and investigated smoking-related disease. His collaboration with Doll helped establish the smoking–lung cancer association.
Tobacco control and health equity: The study and practice of reducing unequal tobacco use and tobacco-related health burdens across populations. Policy effects depend on whether benefits reach groups with the greatest tobacco burden.
Smoke-free law: A law restricting smoking in specified indoor or outdoor public spaces. Smoke-free laws reduce exposure to secondhand smoke and change where smoking is permitted.
Denormalization: A public-health strategy that shifts social norms so a harmful behavior becomes less accepted or common. Advertising limits and smoke-free rules can make tobacco use less socially normal.
