Tobacco protest
A public demonstration concerning tobacco, including opposition to tobacco-control policies or to tobacco production and sales.
Tobacco Riots: A 1794 uprising in western Pennsylvania against a federal excise tax on whiskey and other distilled spirits, including tobacco-related resistance. The name is sometimes applied to tax resistance involving tobacco, but the best-known event concerned whiskey.
Civil resistance: Collective action that challenges authority through nonviolent methods outside routine political channels. Tobacco protests can use demonstrations, petitions, boycotts, or civil disobedience.
Tobacco farmers: Agricultural producers who cultivate tobacco for sale to manufacturers and other buyers. Their protests often focus on crop prices, contracts, and threats to rural livelihoods.
Tobacco control: Policies and actions intended to reduce tobacco use and its health and social harms. Protests can support or oppose the policies grouped under tobacco control.
Tobacco protests in Malawi: Demonstrations by tobacco growers and workers in Malawi over prices, contracts, and conditions in the tobacco trade. Growers' protests illustrate opposition to the commercial terms of tobacco production.
Lobbying: Organized efforts to influence public officials and legislation on behalf of particular interests. Tobacco-industry groups may combine street demonstrations with political pressure.
Tobacco workers: People employed in tobacco cultivation, processing, manufacturing, and distribution. Labor groups may protest working conditions or policies that threaten employment.
Tobacco advertising restrictions: Rules limiting the promotion of tobacco products through advertising, sponsorship, or other marketing. Disputes over marketing restrictions often become visible in public campaigns.
Tobacco farmers' protests in India: Demonstrations by Indian tobacco growers over crop prices, procurement, and government policy. Farmer protests oppose policies or market conditions affecting tobacco livelihoods.
Public smoking ban: A law or regulation prohibiting smoking in specified public places. Restrictions on where people may smoke are a frequent trigger for protest.
