Tokugawa Hidetada

Tokugawa Hidetada was the second shogun of Japan’s Tokugawa dynasty, ruling from 1605 to 1623. He strengthened the shogunate established by his father, Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Tokugawa shogunate: The military government that ruled Japan under the Tokugawa family from 1603 to 1868. Hidetada consolidated this government during its early decades.
Tokugawa Ieyasu: The founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, who ruled Japan as shogun from 1603 to 1605. Ieyasu transferred the shogunal title to Hidetada while retaining substantial authority.
Battle of Sekigahara: The 1600 battle in which Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated a coalition of rival daimyo. The victory created the political conditions for Hidetada’s later succession.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi: A Japanese military leader who unified much of Japan before the rise of the Tokugawa shogunate. Hideyoshi’s succession crisis left a rival regime that Hidetada helped eliminate.
Siege of Osaka: Two campaigns in 1614 and 1615 that destroyed the Toyotomi stronghold at Osaka. Hidetada commanded Tokugawa forces in the final defeat of the Toyotomi clan.
Tokugawa Iemitsu: The third Tokugawa shogun, who succeeded his father Hidetada in 1623. Hidetada secured the succession and later governed alongside Iemitsu as retired shogun.
Tokugawa clan: A Japanese warrior family that ruled the Tokugawa shogunate from 1603 to 1868. Hidetada inherited leadership of the clan as well as the shogunal office.
Emperor Go-Mizunoo: The 108th emperor of Japan, who reigned from 1611 to 1629 during Hidetada’s shogunate. The emperor held court authority while Hidetada exercised military government.
Buke shohatto: A set of regulations governing the conduct and obligations of Japan’s warrior houses. The 1615 code formalized controls over the daimyo during Hidetada’s rule.
Oeyo: A Japanese noblewoman who married Tokugawa Hidetada and became the mother of shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Her marriage connected Hidetada’s household to powerful court and warrior families.
