Trần dynasty

The Trần dynasty ruled Đại Việt from 1225 to 1400. It repelled three Mongol invasions and strengthened the kingdom’s political and cultural institutions.

Trần Thái Tông: The first emperor of the Trần dynasty, who ruled Đại Việt from 1225 to 1258. His accession began Trần rule and established the dynasty’s early imperial order.
Vietnamese monarchy: The hereditary system of kingship that governed Vietnamese states across successive dynasties. The Trần dynasty was one ruling house within this longer institution.
Battle of Bạch Đằng (1288): A 1288 naval battle in which Đại Việt forces defeated a Mongol fleet on the Bạch Đằng River. The victory marked the decisive defeat of the third Mongol invasion under Trần leadership.
Lý dynasty: A Vietnamese dynasty that ruled Đại Việt from 1009 to 1225. The Lý dynasty preceded the Trần, whose founders took power through a court succession.

Battle of Đông Bộ Đầu: A 1258 battle near Thăng Long in which Đại Việt forces fought the first Mongol invasion. It helped force the Mongols to withdraw from the capital during the first invasion.
Trần clan: A Vietnamese family whose members founded and ruled the Trần dynasty. The clan’s marriage ties and court influence enabled its rise to the throne.
Ngô Quyền: A Vietnamese ruler who defeated a Southern Han fleet at the Bạch Đằng River in 938. His earlier victory provided a historical precedent for the Trần triumph at Bạch Đằng.
