Transit-oriented development is compact, mixed-use urban development organized around high-quality public transit. It makes walking, cycling, and transit practical alternatives to driving.

Mixed-use development: Urban development that combines homes, workplaces, shops, or other uses within a walkable area. Nearby daily destinations let residents reach more activities without driving.
Land-use planning: The public process of guiding how land may be developed and used. Zoning and development rules determine whether station areas can become compact and mixed-use.
