Treaty of Gulistan
The 1813 peace treaty that ended the first Russo-Persian War and forced Qajar Iran to cede much of the eastern Caucasus to the Russian Empire.
First Russo-Persian War: A war between the Russian and Persian empires from 1804 to 1813, fought mainly over control of the Caucasus. The treaty ended this war after Russia gained the upper hand.
Caspian Sea: The world's largest inland body of water, bordered by Russia, Iran, and several Central Asian states. Gulistan restricted Iran's ability to maintain naval forces on the Caspian.
Russo-Persian relations: The diplomatic, commercial, and military relations between the Russian and Persian states across several centuries. Their competition over the Caucasus set the long-term context for the treaty.
Treaty of Resht: A 1732 agreement between Safavid Iran and Russia that returned some Russian-occupied Caspian territories to Iran. Unlike Gulistan's territorial losses for Iran, Resht restored Iranian control over occupied lands.
Treaty of Turkmenchay: The 1828 treaty that ended the second Russo-Persian War and imposed further territorial losses on Qajar Iran. Its later settlement extended the losses established at Gulistan.
Caspian Flotilla: The Russian naval force operating on the Caspian Sea, established in the early eighteenth century. The treaty's naval provisions strengthened Russia's dominance over Caspian waters.
Russian annexation of Georgia: The Russian Empire's incorporation of the eastern Georgian kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti in 1801. Iran's opposition to Russian expansion in Georgia helped trigger the war settled at Gulistan.
Treaty of Saint Petersburg (1723): A treaty by which Safavid Iran ceded Caspian territories to Peter the Great's Russia in 1723. It was an earlier Russian territorial gain in the same broad region, later partly reversed.
Russian conquest of the Caucasus: The Russian Empire's gradual military and political incorporation of the Caucasus during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Gulistan marked a decisive stage in Russia's southward expansion.
Qajar dynasty: An Iranian dynasty that ruled from 1789 to 1925, during a period of territorial losses and foreign pressure. Qajar Iran accepted the treaty after its military defeat.
