Treaty of Lutatius

The 241 BCE peace agreement that ended the First Punic War. It required Carthage to evacuate Sicily, pay Rome an indemnity, and release prisoners without ransom.

First Punic War: A war between Rome and Carthage from 264 to 241 BCE, fought chiefly over Sicily. The treaty ended this war and formalized Rome’s victory.
Sicily: The largest Mediterranean island, located south of the Italian peninsula. The agreement required Carthaginian forces to leave the island.
Battle of the Aegates Islands: A 241 BCE naval battle in which Rome defeated a Carthaginian fleet off western Sicily. Its outcome forced Carthage to seek peace on Roman terms.
Treaty of Ebro: A treaty between Rome and Carthage that limited Carthaginian expansion north of the Ebro River. Unlike the 241 BCE settlement, it addressed boundaries in Iberia rather than Sicily.
Roman Sicily: The Roman province established in Sicily after the First Punic War. Carthage’s evacuation transferred the island to Roman control.
War indemnity: A payment imposed on a defeated state to compensate a victor for war costs or losses. Carthage was required to pay Rome an indemnity under the settlement.
Hamilcar Barca: A Carthaginian general who led forces in Sicily during the First Punic War. He negotiated the initial settlement terms for Carthage.
Treaty of Apamea: The 188 BCE agreement that imposed territorial and military restrictions on the Seleucid Empire after its defeat by Rome. It offers a later example of Rome imposing terms on a defeated power.
Carthaginian Mercenary War: A 241–237 BCE revolt by mercenaries and Libyan allies against Carthage. Carthage faced this revolt soon after accepting the treaty’s burdens.
Prisoner of war: A person captured and held by an opposing force during armed conflict. The treaty required the release of prisoners without ransom.
